I'm always excited to see what Little Tiger and The Milk Belly Princess bring home from school in their Friday folders, but this week Little Tiger blew me away.
Little Tiger pin punched eight different sea creatures and wrote a sentence for each one. For those of you who are unfamiliar, pin punching is when, instead of cutting out a shape with scissors, a child takes a pin and punches tiny, connected holes all around the perimeter of a paper shape until it is all punched out. It is one of Little Tiger's favorite things to do at school. Her teacher worked with her on some of the sentences, like this one.
For other sentences, it was obvious that Little Tiger was on her own. When she is working at home, she is always asking me to help her spell words, even ones she's spelled successfully several times before. Since being "wrong" is something that makes her anxious, I was pleased to see that in this project she had the confidence to try her own invented spelling. I think that this might be the best example. "Whales shoot water out of their spouts."
Lest you think Little Tiger's newfound interest in the written word is always used for good, I leave you with this. This was found taped to the door of Little Tiger's bedroom following an evening where The Milk Belly Princess kept busting in unannounced, running around and laughing. When questioned, Little Tiger insisted that the sign was to keep out a DIFFERENT little blond girl NAMED "Nonono" but this story is full of holes.
